An astronomical clock is a clock which not only shows the time, but shows astronomical information such as the location of the sun and moon, the phases of the moon or eclipses. One of the first astronomical clocks was a water-driven one and was built by Su Song, a Song Dynasty engineer. Mechanical Clocks powered by weights came into used between 1300 and 1330. Only the descriptions of their design and construction survive although modern reproductions have been made. Astronomical Clocks can be extremely attractive having a 24 hour analog dial numbered from I to XII and then I to XII again. The years are often portrayed by the 12 signs of the zodiac within the 24 hour dial.
