The "Black Jack" was a pitcher made from leather in the Tudor times. It was made by doubling a piece of leather and sewing about six inches from the edge to form a jug shape. The spare piece was cut to form a handle. It was treated inside with black pitch, hence the name "Black Jack". "Black Jacks" were first used before 1350 but ceased to be used when families started to dine alone.
