An engraving in terms of prints was developed during the 15th Century. The process is carried out by using metal plates, usually copper. The design in engraved into it using a tool called a "burin". This tool is used by the engraver to cut an image from a series of lines which vary in width and depth. The deeper the line, the more ink is used to produce a darker tone. Engraving is a work of art in its own right. Below is a list of famous engravers. This list will grow over time as this site becomes more developed.
