A Mezzotint engraving is a form of intaglio process which involves a plate being rocked with a curved and notched blade. It was invented by Ludwig von Siegen (1609 - 1680). It creates a rough surface that prints black. Colour mezzotints use a separate plate for each colour making it very labour intensive. A Mezzotint is a work of art in its own right.
