In early times there was no refrigeration or other means of keeping food fresh so sauces were used to disguise the flavour of food that was well past its sell by date. This led to the invention of the sauce boat. In the time of George II many sauce boats were on pedestals or had three hoof like feet. This design is still popular today. Sauce Boats are also commonly known as Gravy Boats.
